Welcome to another exciting school year! The senior year is an extremely important and busy year. In addition to your rigorous courses, we will be preparing for the SATs, and ACTs. We will also apply to colleges and funding options available to you with the help of Mrs. Fehliman.
The junior and senior years of AVID contain a research component that focuses on leaders as a catalyst for change. This year the students will research a leader of their choice and analyze the skills he/she used to change their communities for the better.
Binder checks and grade checks are due every Monday. The students should bring a signed grade check sheet every Monday. Parents/guardians please check with your student every weekend to see that the grade check sheets are complete. Your AVID grade will be based on the following: binder checks (50 pts), grade checks (25 pts), tutorials (50 pts), essays/speeches/applications (100 pts), learning logs (15 pts), and participation in Socratic Seminar (25 pts).
I know with your cooperation we can work together to make this year a success. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or just to chat at (530) 622-3634 ext.1216 or email at kmcmurtry@eduhsd.k12.ca.us.
Expectations for AVID Four
In order to have a positive successful year in avid, it is important to know what is expected of you! Please take note of the following requirements.
Every Avid four student will:
- Bring all binders (including AVID) to class for binder checks on Mondays. If we do not have class on Monday, there is no binder check for that week. If you forget your binders, you lose all points for binder check that week. If you are absent, you are excused from the assignment.
- Take at least one page of Cornell notes every day for every academic class. If you are absent for a class, you will turn in a page summary of what you missed, including where you obtained the information (i.e.: teacher, fellow student, Aries, etc.)
- Bring two tutorial questions to class on Tues. and Thurs. This is your admission ticket to class. If you do not come to class with a question, you lose five out 15 points for tutorial that day.
- Maintain a planner for all academic classes.
- Turn in all homework assignments for academic classes. You set an example for all other avid students. If you routinely miss homework assignments, you send the wrong message about AVID to our staff.
- Apply to five four-year colleges (at least one private school)
- Obtain at least two letters of recommendation.
- Apply for at least three scholarships.
- Take the sat/ACT at least one time.
- Complete the fafsa on-line application.
- Complete the AVID research component about a leader of your choice.
- Maintain a positive attitude.
- Have fun!
